OxPropFest Awards 2023 shortlisted Cheng Yu Tung Building for two categories

MICA’s Cheng Yu Tung Building has been shortlisted for two awards: “Project of the Year Award” and “Best Low Carbon Project Award”, by one of the largest property events, OxPropFest Awards 2023.

Project of the Year Award

This category requires a high-level of finish, design, procurement and strong environmental-friendly credentials, and Cheng Yu Tung Building has successfully created a contemporary and contextual new mixed use building for Jesus College within the constrained city centre site. The completed project activates new external spaces: a landscaped raised fourth quad for the college, improved retail services at the front which brings more engagement to the Market Street; simultaneously, Cheng Yu Tung Building is now able to accommodate increased number of students and staff, introducing an innovative Digital Hub to foster interdisciplinary research and cross-channel communications.

The designs were delivered collaboratively: all college members, staff, fellows, students, Oxford City Council, Historic England and the wider community were consulted during each design stage and through 80+ design workshops co-developed the brief and emerging designs. The brief met and largely exceeded all requirements supporting the Colleges long term vision. Clear and effective communication between Oxford Building Control and the project team led to a collaborative approach taken to produce effective results.

Best Low Carbon Project Award

This category entails a need for the proposal to showcase a clear and subsequent implementation of zero carbon strategy. Cheng Yu Tung Building goes beyond and above the mission of benefiting the environment, instead, it as Sir Nigel Shadbolt, the Principal puts it, “With this new development, we are not just embracing the future of learning: we’re shaping it.”

Standing out from an excellent range of submissions, MICA’s design adheres to the company’s value of bringing positive impact to climate change, net-zero, and biodiversity. Cheng Yu Tung Building embodies another successful example of MICA’s persistence in providing a rich mix of cultures and striking newness in a sensitive urban context with dynamic and responsive facades.

OxPropFest 2023 presentation dinner will be held at Keble College on 12th September. All submissions have been judged by pioneers and professionals of the industry, and the awards will be presented by moderator Goldie Sayers with a night of networking opportunities and one-of-a-kind celebrations.

The project was designed in collaboration with a large multidisciplinary team of engineers and consultants:
