Hands Building shortlisted for Structural Timber Awards 2018

The Hands Building at Mansfield College, Oxford has been shortlisted for Education Project of the Year at the Structural Timber Awards. Providing much-needed accommodation and academic space for the College, the building is a new and welcome addition to the Mansfield Campus incorporating 74 en-suite study bedrooms, a Fellow’s flat and a home for the new Bonavero Institute of Human Rights which includes a 160-seat lecture theatre.

The building has been recognised by the judges for its innovative use of CLT of which, as the primary structure for the upper floors, was fundamental to the success of the project. The CLT construction of the project allowed the building to be erected in just 8 weeks which minimised noise pollution and disruption to the College campus, as well minimising the thickness of floor slabs.

Additionally, the choice of CLT had an impact on the project internally, where each student room has one exposed timber surface, providing visual variation and allowing an engagement with the construction of the building.

The Structural Timber Awards recognise the very best in structural timber construction. Returning to the National Conference Centre, Birmingham - the awards will take place on 10 October 2018.
