Hay Castle wins RSAW Building of the Year, RSAW Conservation Award, and RSAW Regional Award 2024

At the RSAW Awards Ceremony last night Hay Castle swept up, winning RSAW Building of the Year, RSAW Conservation Award, and RSAW Regional Award 2024.

The RSAW Judges commented: “An excellent example of how to approach conservation and heritage with spirit and expertise that has delivered a vibrant addition to the civic life of Hay-on-Wye.”

The restoration project involved complex work to rescue and conserve the critically at-risk medieval keep and the Jacobean mansion, restore and open the ancient gate, the oldest of its kind in the UK, and reinstate the vital connection between the castle and the town and create a vibrant hub for the community and visitors.

MICA led the NLHF funded transformation of the site, from a fascinating yet derelict and unsafe collection of structures, to a 21C world-class historic, cultural and educational destination. The highly sensitive project combines high quality conservation and sharp contemporary internal interventions.
