MICA Appointed to Design Wellington College International Lagos in Alaro City, Nigeria
MICA is proud to announce its appointment as the lead architectural design practice for Wellington College International Lagos, a world-class coeducational day and boarding school set to open in Alaro City, Nigeria, in September 2027.
This landmark project is the result of a visionary partnership between Wellington College International—one of the UK’s most respected education providers—and Rendeavour, Africa’s largest new city developer. The school will welcome 1,500 students aged 3–18 and deliver the rigorous English National Curriculum alongside a holistic educational model that integrates sports, music, the arts, and emerging disciplines like AI and entrepreneurship.
A Generational Educational Vision
The appointment to design Wellington College International Lagos reflects our shared commitment with Wellington and Rendeavour to deliver transformative education in state-of-the-art facilities tailored to the evolving needs of students and educators.
“Our work is driven by the belief that architecture plays a pivotal role in shaping how students learn, grow, and connect to their environment,” said Gavin Miller, Partner at MICA. “In Alaro City, we are creating more than just buildings—we are designing an entire educational ecosystem that is as ambitious, dynamic, and future-facing as the young people it will serve.”
Contextually Grounded, Globally Informed
Located in Alaro City—a 2,000-hectare integrated city development within the Lekki Free Zone and just 45 minutes from central Lagos—Wellington College International Lagos is poised to become the benchmark for international education in West Africa. The design will reflect Wellington College’s values of Kindness, Courage, Respect, Integrity, and Responsibility, while integrating Nigerian educational traditions and responding to the local climate, culture, and context.
To further enrich this context-sensitive approach, MICA proposes a strategic subcontracting relationship with Lagos-based Studio Contra. With an established presence in both Lagos and London, Studio Contra will provide invaluable local insight and on-the-ground support throughout the project lifecycle—ensuring seamless coordination and cultural resonance in every design decision.
Designing for Impact
As Wellington College International’s first campus in Africa and the eleventh in its global education network, this school is more than a place of learning—it is a statement of long-term investment in people and place. MICA’s involvement extends from strategic masterplanning and sustainable design to stakeholder engagement and project delivery, ensuring a high-performing, future-proof campus embedded within its urban environment.
Wellington College International Lagos reflects a broader shift towards educational infrastructure as foundational to the future of cities—and we are thrilled to help lead that transformation.
