MICA proceeding with first phase of King’s College London Block 9

MICA is proceeding with Phase 1 of proposals for Block 9 at the King’s College London [KCL] Guy's and St Thomas’ Hospital campus.

St Thomas’s Education Centre or STEC, is a collaboration between KCL and one of England’s most prestigious NHS Trusts, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust (GSTT). The project is to promote close interactions with other health partners to create healthcare educational opportunities that are unique in Europe. STEC is both centrally and strategically located, close to St Thomas’ Hospital, London’s river frontage, and faces many of the city’s landmarks including the Palace of Westminster. The STEC will offer connections to both world-class learning and research institutions, alongside London’s established knowledge capital clusters.

New contemporary spaces have been created to complement the original Victorian structures to create a rich and varied experience. The brief and spatial approach responds to the shift towards collaborative working in healthcare and creating better learning opportunities for students to move into different disciplinary and professional specialisms. Offering a range of spaces that are agile, flexible, but also creative in intent.

4,000m2 net space to deliver creative learning opportunities, promoting interdisciplinary and collaborative work to students and clinical staff through inter-professional and team based learning and simulation.

KCL and GSTT wish to develop the STEC into a leading centre for undergraduate / postgraduate teaching and simulation training, creating 4,000m2 of net area to be operational by 2022.

STEC is the first phase of the wider development of the St Thomas’s Block 9 Campus, and is planned to start on site next year, 2020.
