MICA working with Wellington College and Busan Government and Authorities to develop designs for a major new Wellington College International Busan Campus
MICA have been commissioned to design a new 2,200 pupil co-educational all years through school (day and boarding) for Wellington College International in Busan, South Korea.
The Busan Metropolitan Government announced on the 22nd that it signed a business agreement with the UK's Wellington College and the Busan Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority to establish the Wellington College International Busan Campus. Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon, Wellington College executives, and Kim Ki-young, head of the Busan Jinhae Free Economic Zone, attended the signing ceremony and signed an agreement to establish the Wellington College International Busan Campus in Myeongji International New Town.
Under the agreement, the Busan Metropolitan Government and the Busan Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority promise administrative support such as licensing, while Wellington College promises to introduce education systems and services at the school level in Korea and issue certification equivalent to graduation from the school.
Mayor Park said,
"As the future of the city depends on fostering global talents, the 'Wellington College International Busan Campus' will contribute to Busan's leap forward as a 'global hub city' in conjunction with the opening of Gadeokdo New Airport and the creation of Eco Delta City and Myeongji International New Town."
The site is located on newly urbanising terrain, on field plains between the sea and the mountains beyond, and our team are designing a strong and unified sense of place and identity tailored to a unique educational environment within.
Wellington College was founded in Berkshire, England in 1859 after the Duke of Wellington,
England. It is a world-class prestigious school with a tradition of more than 160 years, and an average of 20 to 30 graduates go to Oxford and Cambridge universities every year. Wellington College already successfully operates overseas campuses in China, Thailand, and India. It was ranked 63rd in the world in the "World Best High School 2024" announced by U.S. media CEO World.
MICA continue to work collaboratively to develop a world-class education campus, which promotes the evokes the architecture of the original UK based Wellington College, while at the same time responding to local context to deliver a highly sustainable approach to education on the site.
