The Hands Building shortlisted for RIBA South Regional Award

The Hands Building at Mansfield College, Oxford has been shortlisted for the RIBA South Regional Awards 2019.

Providing much-needed accommodation and academic space for the College, The Hands Building is the newest addition to the campus. The building incorporates: 73 en-suite bedrooms; a visiting Fellow’s flat; and a home for the new Bonavero Institute for Human Rights, which includes offices, teaching spaces and a 160-seat shared auditorium. It is a bold contemporary addition to the campus with a sensitive connection to the adjacent heritage buildings.

Since being opened by former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan last year The Hands Building has received a certificate from the Oxford Preservation Trust Awards, has been shortlisted for a Structural Timber award and was shortlisted to receive two Offsite Construction awards. The project has also been named “one of the most recent striking examples of CLT construction” by the Timber Trades Journal.

Thirty-seven building projects were entered from the South region, which covers Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Oxfordshire, with only seventeen making it through to the next stage. All shortlisted buildings will now be assessed by a regional jury and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Newbury Racecourse on Thursday 23rd May.
