Woodland Quad Shortlisted for 2025 Schüco Education Building Award

We’re thrilled to share that MICA’s Woodland Quad at Wellington College has been shortlisted for the 2025 Schüco Excellence Award for Education Buildings.

Set within a beautiful woodland setting on an active school campus, the project balances bold contemporary design with deep respect for its natural surroundings. Designed to support wellbeing, sustainability, and long-term performance, the buildings reflect the College’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030.

A key challenge was creating a high-performance, low-carbon design that felt light and natural in its setting. Using mass timber construction with exposed CLT and glulam, the buildings are both sustainable and beautifully crafted. Externally, rich brick detailing and large areas of glazing connect users with the woodland landscape.

Partnering with façade specialists L2i, we used a suite of Schüco systems to meet ambitious thermal, acoustic, and airtightness targets. Key systems included the FW 50+ SG curtain wall, AWS 114 top-hung vents, and ADS 70 HD SG doors. These products allowed for large-format glazing, minimal framing, and consistent performance — while enabling striking architectural features like glass-to-glass corners and deep ribbed brick brise soleils.

One of the most complex aspects was integrating the frameless glazing with other façade elements, including cantilevered masonry and CLT, all while maintaining airtightness and long-term durability. Schüco’s precision-engineered systems helped overcome these challenges, ensuring a seamless and elegant finish.

This recognition highlights MICA’s commitment to sustainable, context-driven architecture that supports academic and pastoral excellence.
