Groundbreaking ceremony marks major milestone for Wellington College International Lagos

Wellington College International has celebrated the groundbreaking of its landmark new school in Lagos, with a ceremony held at Alaro City on 29 January 2026.

The event marked a significant milestone in the delivery of Wellington College International Lagos, the first Wellington College in Africa and a major step in expanding world-class British education across the continent. Senior leaders, project partners and invited guests gathered to celebrate the launch of the 12.5-hectare campus, located within Alaro City in the Lekki Free Zone.

Representing MICA, Gavin and Jamie attended the ceremony and presented the team’s design for the new school. Their presentation showcased the exceptional work delivered over the past year by the wider project team, highlighting a shared commitment to design excellence and innovation.

Scheduled to open in September 2027, the co-educational boarding and day school will accommodate up to 1,500 students aged 3 to 18. The campus will deliver the English National Curriculum through to A-Levels and include a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art facilities, from advanced STEM laboratories and a performing arts theatre to a 50-metre Olympic-size swimming pool, athletics track and full-size rugby pitch.

The groundbreaking ceremony represents an outstanding milestone for the project and the wider consultant team, recognising a year of dedicated collaboration and delivery. The new campus is set to become a flagship educational destination within Alaro City’s emerging urban landscape and a new benchmark for international education in West Africa.

As construction progresses, Wellington College International Lagos will play a vital role in shaping the next generation of leaders, bringing together global educational expertise and local context within a world-class learning environment.
