MICA win RIBA South Award 2026

Woodland Quad at Wellington College has won a 2026 Regional Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in the South.

Delivered as part of the College’s long-term estate masterplan, Woodland Quad marks a significant moment in the evolution of the historic Crowthorne campus. Set within a mature Scots pine woodland, the development introduces a distinctive new character area comprising a co-educational sixth form boarding house, a boys’ day house, and a central renewable energy centre.

The project has been recognised by the RIBA judges for its high-quality design, strong sustainability credentials, and positive contribution to student wellbeing. The judges described the scheme as “humane, homely, low-energy student accommodation” and “a masterclass in connecting with context,” highlighting the way it responds sensitively to its woodland setting while creating spaces that feel welcoming rather than institutional.

Constructed using cross-laminated timber and other low-carbon materials, the buildings significantly reduce embodied carbon while creating warm, calm and uplifting environments for pupils. Carefully considered forms and materials reflect the surrounding landscape and neighbouring heritage buildings, strengthening the connection between students and nature.

A defining aspect of Woodland Quad is its innovative energy strategy. A ground-source heat pump array, housed within the energy centre, provides low-carbon heating to the new buildings as well as to Wellington College’s historic Victorian estate—supporting the College’s wider ambition to reach carbon neutrality.

Beyond its environmental performance, the scheme plays a key strategic role. As a decant facility, it enables the phased refurbishment of existing accommodation and supports the College’s transition to full co-education, while enhancing pastoral provision and operational efficiency.

This award recognises the strength of collaboration between client and architect, combining long-term vision with thoughtful delivery. Woodland Quad stands as a benchmark for sustainable, wellbeing-focused educational design, demonstrating how contemporary architecture can successfully enrich a historic campus while shaping a more inclusive and low-carbon future.
