Andy Long Sustainability and Building Services Consultant

Andy is a Sustainability and Building Services engineer who has worked with MICA for over 20 years on a variety of projects, fostering an understanding and sympathetic response to integrating engineering solutions from feasibility through to completion and handover.

His approach is to provide innovative, low energy design with pragmatic solutions that benefit and respond to the overall building design, fabric and usage. This contributes to ensuring the comfort and flexibility of the internal environment whilst also reducing the energy consumption and on-going maintenance.

In collaboration with MICA, Andy has successfully delivered numerous projects including: Lincoln University Design Academy, Corpus Christi College auditorium within the walls of a Scheduled Monument, Towner Contemporary Art Gallery in Eastbourne , detail designs for a new entrance building and public square at the Lyric Hammersmith, East Ham Civic Campus and award winning Customer Service Centre and Library for London Borough of Newham, both the Old Hall and Great Hall and Library refurbishment projects, Horniman Museum South Hall Restoration, new student housing for Cheltenham Ladies’ College and Hay Castle
regeneration in Hay-on-Wye. Many of the projects have implemented innovative servicing strategies in complex settings, and have gained a number of accreditations including BREEAM, WELL, and Passivhaus.

Andy is currently working on a number of educational projects with MICA including the Woodland Quad and Sixth Form Centre at Wellington College which are both currently on site. His work at Christ's College Cambridge Future Mapping Study has involved development of a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy, drawn up to achieve 30% carbon reduction commitments by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2048 or sooner. The strategy considers ways to reduce energy use across the estate with new renewable energy sources (ground source and air source heat pumps, photovoltaics) providing a balanced new strategy to replace the existing fossil fuel energy supply. Andy is working with MICA to continue to integrate building systems that focus on resource efficiency, environmental quality and resilience as part of building design and to develop estates decarbonisation strategies for a number of historic estates including Wellington College.

Previously working for Mott Macdonald between 2000 and 2018, and more recently Clearwater, Andy has acted as Project Director and Building Services Engineer, responsible
for overseeing the day to day running of a multi-discipline engineering team prioritising and coordinating production of deliverables. He brings a wealth of experience of new build and refurbishment projects within the educational, residential, leisure and culture sectors.

He has recently joined the MICA team and will be leading the practices new Estates Decarbonisation Strategies and Mechanical and Electrical Design.
