Sutton Tramlink

Sutton Tramlink

As part of the Sutton Tramlink study, our team have been working with TfL to explore the potential strategic benefits of improved transport connections, developing a series of urban typologies, encompassing a range of conditions from the suburban edges to the metropolitan centre.

The boroughs of Sutton and Merton have plans to support their communities with new homes, jobs and improved town centres. Currently parts of both boroughs have very limited public transport options and the Sutton Link would help enable the delivery of new homes and jobs in these areas.

Depending which route is chosen, the Sutton Link would:
– Open up transport options for communities including St Helier, Rosehill and north Sutton,
– Create or improve connections to other centres, including Wimbledon, South Wimbledon or Colliers Wood,
– Support the development of Sutton town centre, which is planned to create up to 5,000 homes and 2,000 new jobs by 2031,
– Support plans for Morden town centre, and to provide up to 1,800 new homes in the centre.

Whilst the predominate context is at a relatively low suburban density, there are strategic areas that could see greater development; through, densification of local centres, alongside general densifying effects within suburbia. These are all tested through a number of typologies.

Sutton Town and Civic Centre

The tram can serve as a catalyst for intensification and regeneration of the civic centre, facilitating improvements to the retail and residential mix and greater interconnection with the rest of the borough.

‘Suburban Junction’ at Rosehill

Providing a better local centre that can enhance the enjoyment and use of the surrounding landscape, in association with consideration of the hospital site.

Demonstrating how the landscape potential of some sites may make high quality residential development steadily more achievable in lieu of SIL sites, as the improvements occur to multiple tram routes.
