Nuffield College

MICA is appointed by Nuffield College to review their existing estate to find efficiencies and opportunities for improved educational offer within the existing complex of buildings.

Nuffield College is a graduate-only college at Oxford University. The College have 150 students and fellows with a focus on social science. The original college buildings were designed by Austen Harrison. Together with the water feature and Lower Quad paving, the buildings are Grade II listed.

MICA was selected as the lead designer through an invited competition in June 2020. The project is currently under construction.

The scope of work and objectives for the project include:
- Strategic review of accessible routes and use of spaces.
- Making wheelchair accessible between Lower and Upper Quads
- Improving accessibility at key entrances, key common areas, meeting and event spaces.
- Improving visibility and landscape connectivity
- Creating a new Porters Lodge at a more prominent and originally designed entrance
- Decluttering the main entrance and library spaces on ground level to create an improved balance of social, learning and meeting spaces.
- Increasing the number of seats and flexibility for Lecture Theatre and existing teaching space Clay Room remodel
- Increasing the number of WCs (unisex and accessible) to suit increased occupancy
- Improving fire escape strategy for basement level.
