Pioneer Infrastructure project gains BREEAM Very Good certification
Lancaster University “Spine” has received certification from BREEAM.
The BRE have confirmed that this is the first project to complete and be awarded the final (post-construction) certification under the BREEAM infrastructure pilot scheme.
The project designed and delivered by MICA’s team rejuvenates the 1km principal pedestrian walkway on Lancaster University’s Bailrigg campus - the “Spine”.
Environmental, Social + Economic impact:
The existing low and dark canopy no longer offered the protection it was intended to provide and was considered to be a negative aspect of the campus. The proposals redefine the Spine as a necklace thoroughfare, a series of characterful connecting courtyards and gardens unified by a resilient ‘carpet’ of clay pavers and light-filled cantilevering canopies.
Research of the historical nature of the site and surrounding context identified potential opportunities for existing structures to be reused and enjoyed by new communities. The new arrangement provides striking ‘outdoor rooms’ that once again engage the Spine with buildings and their interiors promoting dwell time, outdoor study and for external spaces to be enjoyed by all.
A rich, warm material palette is enlivened by carefully considered lighting to provide a vibrant, changeable and safe spine. This, married with the opening up of long vista, enhanced wayfinding and building entrances, deliver a lighter, brighter and more navigable route for all. The use of local materials, habitat enhancements, a green roof to the new canopies and an extension of the existing Sustainable Urban Drainage Strategy underpin a holistic environmental strategy that has achieved BREEAM Very Good as a pioneer project for the Infrastructure certification.
